Orthopedic Success Stories
Meet Don
Don Winger came to the Cedar Rapids Orthopedic Clinic when his osteoarthritis became so intolerable he could no longer take part in his favorite daily activities.
"I am 59-years-old and retired. I didn't work my whole life to spend my retirement on a couch listening to my brains turn to jelly while I watch the tube. I love to lead a very active life style and I can't remember a year of my life where I didn't hit the golf course once at least once a week, except 2009, when my osteoarthritis (medial aspect of both knees) kept me from everything I love.
I couldn't longer walk more than a city block without feeling feeble, not a feeling I'm fond of. I couldn't play golf unless I rode the whole course and there aren't many courses around here that are cart paths only. My wife and I went to Pebble Beach and I needed to take a taxi just to go a few blocks. I felt old for the first time in my life.
But then I had the surgeries. Now I can walk for miles. I ride my bike every day too. I get to play golf every Tuesday and my daughter just told me she's having a baby boy in the Spring and I can't wait to play with my grandson. Thanks to Dr. Schneider, I'll be able to.
My right knee was done on October 5, 2010 and my left knee on November 29, 2010. I did my physical therapy following surgery at Benefit Hospital East and even though it was hard work, the results were amazing.
I can't say enough good things about the staff at Benefit Health System's Hospital and Clinics. Thank you for giving me my life back!"
